He angitūtanga – The opportunity

Are you a hands-on technical professional who loves a mix of outdoor fieldwork and meaningful data analysis? Do you want to play a vital role in protecting our environment and serving our community? If you are looking for a collaborative team where your work directly impacts the well-being of our district, we would love to hear from you!

We are looking for a collaborative Senior Field Technician to join our Community Infrastructure Group, a dedicated team focused on delivering high-quality operations, maintenance, and capital development across 3 Waters, Roading, and Solid Waste. In this vital role, you will be the boots on the ground and the analytical mind behind our compliance monitoring, working closely with our Compliance & Regulatory Lead to ensure Horowhenua District Council (HDC) consistently meets its environmental, resource consent, and public health obligations. From collecting essential field samples to sharing insights with regional leaders, regulators, and Iwi partners, your work will directly safeguard our natural resources and community assets.

He kōrero mōu – About you

To thrive in this dynamic position, you will bring a strong background in environmental sampling, compliance monitoring, or data collection within water services, waste management, or a similarly regulated industry. You possess a keen analytical eye for interpreting technical data and maintaining accurate registers, paired with a genuinely customer-centric mindset that allows you to communicate effectively with everyone from field crews to regional leaders. A natural collaborator, you enjoy guiding project teams on regulatory standards, proactively modelling a strong health and safety culture, and bringing a high level of professional integrity to standard procedures and best practices.

Ngā kawenga matua – What you’ll be doing

This role offers a fantastic balance of independent fieldwork, data management, and relationship building. Day-to-day, you will lead regular monitoring programs across HDC landfills, water treatment plants, and networks, investigating site issues and providing practical recommendations to our team leads. You will collect and manage compliance data to help prepare regulatory reports, maintain trackers, and support operational reviews to ensure our infrastructure projects meet top safety, quality, and environmental standards. Beyond the data, you will actively coordinate responses to customer inquiries, work with field staff to resolve issues, and help strengthen Council’s strategic relationships by working collaboratively with cultural stakeholders and local government partners.

He aha ai mātou? – Why join us?

At HDC, we believe that great infrastructure is the backbone of a thriving community, and when you join us, you are directly investing in the future of our region. We pride ourselves on a welcoming, supportive work culture where your voice is heard, your professional growth is backed, and your daily contributions have a visible, positive impact out in the field. This is an environment where you can truly own your space, develop your technical expertise, and collaborate with a great team that ensures we all return home safely at the end of the day.
