Pou Whirinaki - Fixed Term Contract – November 2024 – April 2026 

About the role

This role works within the He Ara Whakamana Tangata team, with its primary purpose to meet the needs of residents residing within HomeGround (80 tenants) and Te Ao Mārama (63 Tenants) apartments. While also providing activities and opportunities for wider whānau engagement in the activities space. 

The Pou Whirinaki role will be responsible for maintaining current activities and services while increasing the number of initiatives, activities and engagement opportunities from a fully embedded Mātauranga Māori lens. They will be instrumental in creating relationships both internally and externally which directly relates to the current activities space, to re-energise and embed a te ao Māori look, feel and experience. This strategy will require input and support from services aligned with He Ara Whakamana Tangata.

Duties

  • Integrate and embed mātauranga Māori projects and initiatives within the activities space and throughout the laneway areas where services are delivered to our clients. 
  • Facilitate opportunities for iwi, hapū and whānau Māori to contribute to activities that have a significant impact on our whānau.
  • Provide consistent guidance on kaupapa Māori, tikanga Māori te reo Māori and Māori current affairs to enhance the capacity of the activities service delivery. 
  • Develop and implement initiatives and design changes to be responsive to Mātauranga Māori. 
  • Develop relationships internally and with relevant external providers that support the Mission and its work.

Skills & Experience

  • Knowledge of Kaupapa Māori principles e.g., understanding culture, power and how it relates to the Treaty.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of implementing te reo me ōna tikanga Māori into organisational practice.
  • Training and facilitation qualification preferable.
  • Reputation as someone who is trusted and leads in a tika, pono and aroha way.
  • Effective leadership skills that can empower and motivate others.

Skills, experience and knowledge may also be obtained from a number of different experiences. For example, from paid work, voluntary work, work undertaken within your Church, Marae, or from specific iwi/whānau responsibilities.

About the organisation

Auckland City Mission - Te Tāpui Atawhai supports Aucklanders in greatest need. Our services have evolved as the city’s social needs have changed, and we respond to these needs with care and compassion while advocating for a reality where there are: enough suitable homes, enough money for nutritious food, and easily accessible health care for all.
