Mō Tēnei Tūranga Mahi | About the Role

This is a 0.8 FTE part‑time, fixed‑term role from 11 May 2026 to 11 December 2026, appointed to cover maternity leave within the School of Nursing. The Academic Liaison Nurse – Surgical (Dedicated Education Unit) supports nursing ākonga during their practicum placements within Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Hawke’s Bay, ensuring high‑quality clinical learning experiences that align with programme and regulatory requirements.

The role involves teaching, supervising, supporting, and assessing nursing students in the practicum environment while working closely with academic colleagues, practicum staff, and health sector partners. This position is integral to maintaining strong, collaborative relationships between EIT and clinical agencies, contributing to student success, professional practice standards, and positive learning outcomes.

The appointing salary for this role will be commensurate with the suitable candidates' skills and experience.

The Academic Liaison Nurse – Surgical (DEU) is based in the School of Nursing, Hawke’s Bay campus, reporting to the Practicum Manager / Assistant Head of School / Head of School, and will be responsible for:

  • Teaching, supervising, supporting, and assessing nursing students in the practicum setting
  • Liaising with unit managers, registered nurses, team leaders, and health professionals to coordinate effective student learning experiences
  • Supporting students to develop and achieve practicum learning objectives appropriate to their level of study
  • Maintaining accurate student assessment records and contributing to moderation and evaluation processes
  • Acting as a professional role model and maintaining current nursing practice and education standards

He kōrero mōu | About You

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Registration as a New Zealand Registered Nurse with a current Annual Practising Certificate
  • A minimum of three years’ nursing practice experience in Aotearoa New Zealand
  • Broad, current nursing practice knowledge and experience relevant to the surgical practicum environment
  • An understanding of Te Kawa Whakaruruhau principles of cultural safety and a commitment to equitable, inclusive learning environments
  • The ability to build and maintain effective professional relationships across education and health settings
