Southern Cross Invercargill Hospital is the southernmost private surgical hospital in the Southern Cross network, it is widely known and used by people throughout the Southland and Queenstown-Wakatipu basin areas. The hospital features advanced theatre systems, including robotic orthopaedic surgery.  Our highly skilled and caring team provide excellent care to 4200 patients per year.  Our elective surgical services include Breast; Endoscopy and Gastroenterology; General; Gynaecology; Ophthalmology; Oral and Maxillofacial; Orthopaedic; Ear Nose and Throat; and Urology surgery.  

Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

As our Ward Manager, you'll have the opportunity to make a genuine impact by leading a passionate team dedicated to delivering exceptional patient care. Providing both clinical and operational leadership, you'll create an environment where patients receive safe, high-quality, person-centred care while your team is empowered to perform at their very best. You'll oversee the day-to-day operations of the ward, ensuring the right staffing, skills and resources are in place to meet patient needs, while driving continuous improvement, enhancing the patient journey, and championing culturally safe and inclusive nursing practice.

Working closely with the Clinical Operations Manager, Medical Specialists and multidisciplinary teams, you'll foster a positive, collaborative culture built on trust, accountability and excellence. You'll lead quality, safety and clinical governance initiatives, ensuring compliance with professional standards while identifying opportunities to improve outcomes and service delivery. Passionate about developing others, you'll coach and mentor your team, encourage ongoing professional growth, and inspire a culture of innovation, teamwork and continuous learning that supports both exceptional patient experiences and the future success of Southern Cross Healthcare. This is a full-time permanent position based in our Southern Cross Invercargill Hospital.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

  • Proven success leading high-performing teams, with at least five years' leadership experience in a healthcare environment.
  • Strong operational management experience within a hospital setting, with the ability to balance clinical excellence, workforce planning and service delivery.
  • A collaborative leadership style with exceptional coaching, mentoring and team-building skills that inspire others to succeed.
  • Confidence making sound clinical and operational decisions, managing competing priorities and navigating complex situations with professionalism.
  • Experience fostering positive relationships with clinicians, multidisciplinary teams and key stakeholders to achieve outstanding patient outcomes.
  • Financial and commercial awareness, with experience managing budgets and resources being highly regarded.
  • Well-developed communication, negotiation and conflict resolution skills, with the ability to lead through change and build an engaged team culture.
  • Experience within a private healthcare environment will be an advantage.
  • Current New Zealand Registered Nurse Annual Practising Certificate.
  • PDRP Level 4 (Expert) or working towards this is desirable.
  • A tertiary qualification in Nursing, Management or a related discipline.
