The role 

We are seeking an experienced regulatory practitioner with demonstrated leadership and organisational skills to join our Regulatory Team as we strengthen our capacity and capability to monitor compliance of primary sector activities in our region.  

This is a permanent position located in Palmerston North. 

We are looking for a dynamic and effective leader who is passionate about achieving positive environmental outcomes for the region. In this role, you will lead the implementation and oversight of Council’s regulatory obligations for monitoring compliance with primary land use activities, helping to shape effective responses in a complex and evolving resource management environment. You will bring strong regulatory expertise, sound judgement and proven people leadership skills, while modelling best-practice compliance, monitoring and enforcement standards. Reporting to the Regulatory Manager, you will develop and lead compliance strategies for existing and emerging environmental regulations and policies, mentor and support others, and work alongside a well-established, highly experienced and motivated leadership team with a strong sense of camaraderie.

About you

You’ll be an experienced regulatory leader who brings sound judgement, strong people leadership and a practical approach to navigating complex compliance environments. To succeed in this role you will:

  • Bring three to five years’ leadership experience within the compliance, monitoring and enforcement sector, with the confidence and ability to effectively guide teams through a complex regulatory framework.
  • Apply an advanced understanding of best practice in primary industry activities, supported by sound judgement and a practical, solutions-focused approach, whilst working within a regulatory framework. 
  • Demonstrate strong capability across time, risk, project and file management, communication, evidence gathering and evaluation, negotiation, problem solving and decision making.
  • Interpret and apply relevant legislation, rules and regulations with accuracy, consistency and professionalism. Work effectively with a high level of autonomy, while contributing positively to a collaborative and supportive leadership environment.
  • Lead, mentor and support staff to perform at their best, building capability and encouraging a culture of accountability, continuous improvement and shared success.
