SurfCom Operations Supervisor

Since 1910, right across Aotearoa, our lifeguards have saved thousands of lives and ensured millions have returned home safely after a day at the beach. 

Surf Life Saving NZ (SLSNZ) is truly unique, delivering proactive surf lifeguarding and essential emergency rescue services, a range of public education and beach safety programmes, member education, training and development, as well as being a highly respected sport. We have a vision that no one drowns at the beach in Aotearoa New Zealand. 

SurfCom is Surf Life Saving New Zealand’s national operations and communications centre which provides support for all surf lifesaving operations around Aotearoa New Zealand. Based alongside Coastguard New Zealand at Auckland Marine Rescue Centre, SurfCom is operational 24/7, 365 days a year and is the first point of contact for our partner agencies such as Police, St John and Coastguard.

We are looking for an enthusiastic person who is an excellent communicator and enjoys working as part of a team. There is one permanent role available which will operate four days on and four days off. The SurfCom Operations Supervisors (two) will be working closely with the SurfCom Manager in the development of SurfCom as the service grows. 

SurfCom Operations Supervisors:

Lead a team of SLSNZ SurfCom Operators and Duty Officers, while working closely with Coastguard Operations room staff

  • Provide communication support for surf lifeguards 
  • Activate and support services during major incidents
  • Keep accurate records of communications and compile operational data
  • Monitor incoming patrol information as well as weather and water quality updates
  • Provide guidance and support to members using the SLSNZ Operational Application

The following experience is desirable but can be taught: 

  • Experience in communications / dispatch services 
  • CIMS 3  
  • Marine VHF Radio Award or SLSNZ Radio Communication Module
  • Experience as a Surf Lifeguard or SurfCom Operator
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office applications including Word and Excel
  • Commitment to the mission and values of SLSNZ.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
