About the Role
Pete is a 36-year-old man who loves to socialise with others and give back to his community through his volunteering roles. Pete also enjoys visiting the airport and train station to observe planes and trains. At home, Pete enjoys looking at maps and newspapers, and singing along to YouTube music videos.
Pete has autism and likes his staff to give him a very clear plan for his day. This is written up and discussed every morning. Unexpected events and changes in routine can be highly stressful for Pete and he will need support coordinators that are able to provide reassurance and think quickly to find solutions. At times of high anxiety, Pete can express his feelings using physical aggression towards those around him so the ability to remain calm under pressure and walk away are essential in this role. Once calm, Pete is quick to apologise and move on so the ability to understand that his behaviours are not personal and to reconnect quickly is also important.
Pete is an intelligent guy and being non-verbal he finds other ways to communicate with people. Pete is good at using photos, images, gestures, and some sounds to communicate. Pete needs support coordinators who are patient and will allow him time to communicate. He likes to hear what you have to say as well and prefers short, simple sentences with time to process the information you have given.
Pete has a good sense of humour and enjoys having a joke with others. He also loves to garden, watch the rugby and go down water slides! If you think you can help Pete structure his day and get active in the community then we would love to hear from you.
