Service Desk Technician

Port Otago Group’s business comprises a regional container terminal, bulk port activities, cruise and property investment and development. We service South Canterbury, Otago, and Southland, working with customers to streamline their supply chains. Our culture is hands-on, safety focused and encourages continuous improvement.

Our diverse portfolio means there is always something on the go and as a business we are collaborative, fast-paced and always open.

About the role:

Are you the kind of person who loves solving problems, helping people, and keeping technology humming along behind the scenes? Do you thrive in a fast-paced environment where no two days look the same? If so, we would love to hear from you.

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Service Desk Technician who’s passionate about delivering great IT support and keen to grow their skills in a dynamic and supportive team. This role is permanent full-time and is based on site in our award-winning, vibrant Head Office in beautiful Port Chalmers.

Reporting to the IT Service Delivery Lead, you will be our go-to troubleshooter responsible for providing technical support across all our Port Otago teams to ensure the reliable, secure and efficient operation of all technology systems.

As part of this role, you will also be responsible for:

• Acting as our primary contact for all incoming IT incidents, requests, and inquiries.

• Proactively managing assigned tickets including updating, closing, and recording resolutions within agreed timeframes.

• Providing Level 1 and 2 support for the IT Service Desk including user account management, hardware setup, software installations and other technical issues.

• Helping to create and maintain accurate documentation, including solutions, troubleshooting guides, and user instructions.

• Identifying opportunities for Service Desk process improvement and implementing these in collaboration with the IT Service Delivery Lead.

About you:

You bring a genuine passion for IT and a positive, customer‑focused approach to every interaction. You’re curious, thrive in a fast‑paced environment, juggle priorities with ease, and enjoy rolling up your sleeves to get things done.

You will also bring:

• 2+ years’ experience in an entry level IT role, where support was provided in a Microsoft environment.

• Strong problem-solving ability and able to troubleshoot issues methodically and think on your feet.

• High attention to detail.

• Strong written and verbal skills, with the ability to tailor your approach.

• Passionate about learning and upskilling, with a curiosity for new technologies and improvements.

• Ability to communicate technical issues with non-technical kaimahi.

• A proactive, flexible, self‑starting approach.

Preferably, you’ll also hold a tertiary IT qualification, a Microsoft certification, and have experience working with ITIL frameworks — but if you bring the right attitude and skills, we’d still love to hear from you.

What’s in it for you?

You’ll get to work with a supportive, driven and collaborative team who turn up every day to make a difference. You’ll also have access to a range of fantastic benefits including:

· A competitive remuneration package and support for your ongoing development.

· 7% employer superannuation contribution.

· Company-paid comprehensive health insurance cover for you, your partner, and any dependent children (valued at $8,800 per year).

· Amazing Otago Harbour views from your desk, free on-site parking, EV chargers and secure bike storage.

· Fruit boxes delivered weekly to break areas, full uniform provided, Nespresso machines on-site for your daily coffee fix, and various wellness initiatives throughout the year.

 Heads up:

· This is typically a Monday to Friday position, but as the Port operates 24/7, occasionally some flexibility is required.

· You must have a high standard of health and safety.

· You must be able to pass Ministry of Justice, ACC checks and a medical which includes a drug and alcohol test as part of our recruitment process.

· We complete random drug and alcohol testing.
