Marketing Manager
Hands-on, quick to learn, and good at keeping lots of moving parts in line.
This is a senior, hands-on role with no team to manage and no overall strategy to write. We need an experienced pair of hands: someone who works things out fast, finishes what they start, and keeps our people, suppliers and systems pulling in the same direction.
Why join OCULA Group?
OCULA Group is a growing group of independent optometry practices, with eleven across New Zealand and more joining through acquisition. We give independent practices the systems and support of a larger organisation, while keeping the local relationships and personal care that make them successful.
Our brands, websites and core systems are established. You will run them well every day and refine them over time with AI and automation. Specialists handle the deep work, such as Meta ads and SEO; you make sure it lands, joined up and on time. You will work directly with our General Manager of Operations (GMO) and CEO, with real ownership of what you deliver.
What the role looks like
About two-thirds of your time is owning the day-to-day marketing programme across our practices, in line with priorities agreed with the GMO. You will:
- Run practice and campaign requests from brief to finish
- Build email and SMS recalls and patient journeys in our CRM
- Keep websites, local SEO and Google Business Profiles current, and keep Google reviews coming in
- Create everyday content in Canva
- Brief and chase freelancers and agencies, and check their work
- Report on what is working in plain language, and recommend next steps
- Coordinate new-practice acquisition marketing and onboarding, preserving each practice's local identity while maintaining OCULA brand standards
About one-third of your time is pilots and trials with our CEO: setting up experiments, measuring them, and helping us decide quickly what to keep or drop. You will have protected time for this every day, and you will find practical ways to use AI to make the team faster.
Success is measured by whether things get finished, whether bookings go up, and whether we can see why.
Your first 90 days
- Deliver at least 90% of practice requests by their due date
- Get our monthly report out by working day 5
- By day 60, run the workflow independently, needing under 30 minutes of the GMO's time a week
- Run your first pilot, with a keep-or-drop recommendation
What we mean by an A player
- You make complexity simpler, tidying messy processes rather than working around them
- You own things from start to finish, including the boring last 10%
- You can tell signal from noise
- You are resourceful, and you ask for help when it is the faster route
- You use AI tools every day, and you check what they give you
- You are good with people: you can brief a freelancer, chase a supplier politely and keep everyone moving
- You make sound decisions within budget and brand guidelines, and raise risks early with a solution
Technology you will work with
Taguchi (CRM), WordPress, Google Business Profile, Google Analytics 4, Meta Ads Manager, Canva, Asana, Power BI and AI tools such as Claude.
This is probably not for you if you:
- Want to lead a team or set the marketing strategy
- Wait for detailed instructions before starting
- Prefer to hand off the detail rather than get into it
About you
- At least 5 years of hands-on marketing across channels such as email, social, web and paid
- Real experience with a CRM or email platform, WordPress, Canva and reporting tools
- A practical understanding of Meta ads, SEO and Google Business Profiles
- Clear, tidy writing and good attention to detail
- Confident balancing CEO and GMO priorities, and flagging clashes early
- Healthcare, optical or multi-site experience is a bonus, but not essential
Why you will stay
- Direct access to our CEO and GMO
- Real ownership and room to make decisions
- Hybrid working
- A clear 90-day sprint plan
- Room to grow as the group grows
The details
- Salary: $85,000 to $105,000 a year, depending on experience
- Hybrid, based in Newmarket, Auckland
- Full-time, starting as soon as possible
- Reports to our GMO, working alongside our CEO
- Right to work in New Zealand required
How to apply
Click Apply Now and send your CV with short answers to:
1. Tell us about a time you took over something messy and made it simple. What did you change?
2. Describe something you had to figure out quickly with no one to show you. How did you do it?
3. Exercise: a practice manager asks, "Can you do something for our spring frames promotion? Email and Facebook, maybe? Needed by next week-ish." Rewrite it as a brief of five lines or fewer, and list the questions you would ask before starting. We are looking for sound prioritisation, commercial judgement and a practical plan, not just polished creative.
Applications close on Friday 6 November. Shortlisted applicants will have a phone interview, a work sample (about two hours), then meet our GMO and CEO. We aim to decide by Friday 4 December, and a notice period is fine.

- Confident balancing priorities from both the CEO and the GMO: you clarify trade-offs, propose a plan and flag genuine clashes early rather than wait to be told
