We are currently seeking an experienced and technically skilled professional to join the Environmental Data Team in the Regional Services and Information Group as a Senior Environmental Data Technician.
This is a permanent, full-time position located in Palmerston North.
As a Senior Environmental Data Technician, you will be responsible for the acquisition, processing, and delivery of a wide range of environmental data to support resource management, engineering design, and emergency response. This role spans surface water hydrology, groundwater, water quality, air quality, atmospheric, and soil monitoring, with a strong focus on providing reliable flood warning and low flow information services.
The position has ownership of specific portfolios within the Environmental Data Team, ensuring monitoring programmes are implemented effectively, data is collected accurately, and systems such as telemetry and data acquisition networks operate to required standards. The Senior Technician is accountable for maintaining high-quality data through verification, analysis, and archiving processes, and robust asset management, ensuring outputs meet ISO and customer requirements.
In addition, the role contributes to the operation and continuous improvement of monitoring systems, supports the management of contractors and site activities, and ensures compliance with quality management systems and health and safety requirements. The Senior Technician maintains strong relationships with internal teams, contractors, and stakeholders, and plays a key role in supporting team performance.
A key aspect of the role is mentoring and coaching junior staff, contributing to capability development across the team, and supporting a collaborative, high-performing work environment across the department.
The position requires a high level of technical expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to manage competing priorities while delivering accurate, timely, and reliable environmental data services.

To be successful in this role, you will have:
A postgraduate qualification in an environmental discipline and an understanding of electronics would be advantageous.
