At Antarctica New Zealand, we proudly ensure that Antarctica and the Southern Ocean are valued, protected and understood.  We support world-leading science and environmental protection and raise public awareness of the global significance of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.

The Antarctic Science Platform (ASP) is a Strategic Science Investment, funded by the MBIE. This capability fund is designed to enhance collaboration and innovation within New Zealand’s Antarctic science community and to deliver research that supports environmental management and policy outcomes. 

Mō te mahi| About the role - What you’ll be doing  

This role contributes to the success of the Antarctic Science Platform and Antarctica New Zealand by contributing high quality science communication across a variety of platforms and audiences, together with providing strategic advice to the Antarctic Science Platform Director and leadership team and the Antarctica New Zealand Chief Science Advisor.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Work with top Antarctic scientists to translate complex scientific information into engaging content across a wide variety of platforms for varied audiences, with a focus on written content
  • Contribute a science communication lens to the Antarctic Science Platform’s Communications Strategy
  • Contribute to Antarctica New Zealand’s and the Antarctic Science Platform’s multiple statutory reporting requirements with the provision of written scientific content
  • Develop and run webinars, workshops and conferences in consultation with team members

  Mōu | About you - What will you bring?

You will bring an excellent suite of communication skills including writing, evidenced by your science degree and/or significant experience in communicating complex scientific information to varied audiences. Additionally, your ability to develop and maintain strong long-term relationships will be enhanced by your knowledge of the New Zealand science system.

Skills and Experience Include:

  • At least 5 years prior employment in a science communications role in a research organisation
  • Commitment to incorporating Vision Mātauranga as a fundamental element of the Antarctic Science Platform
  • Proficiency with Adobe applications and content creation
  • Experience in website design and maintenance
  • Agility to adapt quickly to changing communications needs
