Southern Cross Invercargill Hospital is the southernmost private surgical hospital in the Southern Cross network, it is widely known and used by people throughout the Southland and Queenstown-Wakatipu basin areas. The hospital features advanced theatre systems, including robotic orthopaedic surgery.  Our highly skilled and caring team provide excellent care to 4200 patients per year. Our elective surgical services include Breast; Endoscopy and Gastroenterology; General; Gynaecology; Ophthalmology; Oral and Maxillofacial; Orthopaedic; Ear Nose and Throat; and Urology surgery. 

Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

As our Safety, Quality & Risk Manager, you will play a pivotal leadership role in driving a culture of excellence, safety, and continuous improvement across the hospital. Leading the Health & Safety, Quality & Risk, Infection Prevention, and Education functions, you will partner closely with the General Manager, and wider leadership team to ensure robust clinical governance and the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care. This is a highly influential role where you will shape and embed systems, strategies, and initiatives that align with industry best practice, regulatory standards, and the wider Southern Cross Healthcare network vision.

You will champion innovation and improvement initiatives that enhance patient outcomes, strengthen workplace safety, and create an engaged, high-performing culture. From leading significant event reviews and accreditation activities to driving quality improvement programmes and supporting data-driven decision making, you will be at the forefront of ensuring operational excellence across the hospital. You will also inspire and empower teams through coaching, education, collaboration, and leadership, helping to build capability and embed a strong safety and quality mindset throughout the organisation.

This is a full-time permanent position based in our Southern Cross Invercargill Hospital.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

  •  5+ years’ experience in healthcare leadership, governance, quality, or risk management, with a track record of driving positive outcomes 
  • Strong expertise in safety, quality, and risk management, with a passion for continuous improvement and patient excellence 
  • Proven ability to lead, inspire, and develop high-performing teams within complex healthcare environments 
  • Strategic and proactive leader who can influence change and successfully deliver improvement initiatives 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to turn data insights into meaningful action 
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships at all levels
  • Confident using quality, reporting, and risk management systems, with strong digital capability 
  • Experience in areas such as emergency management, project management, change management, or improvement methodologies highly regarded 
  • Relevant tertiary qualification in healthcare, nursing, risk management, or a related discipline 
  • Postgraduate qualifications and/or training in clinical governance, quality improvement, or methodologies such as ICAM, Bowtie, or London Protocol advantageous 
  • Positive, curious, and solutions-focused mindset, with the resilience and drive to lead innovation and continuous improvement
