Contract: Temporary/Contract - 7 months full-time (August 2024 - March 2025).

Hours of Work: Full-time, 40 hours per week Monday to Friday.

Location: SPCA National Office (Hobsonville, Auckland) or remote work-from-home anywhere in New Zealand.

About the role

The Scientific Officer role supports the work of the SPCA in providing high-quality science-based advice and leadership to advance animal welfare which is consistent with the vision, values and aspirations of the SPCA. The successful candidate will work in a team environment to promote animal welfare issues in support of the strategic objectives of SPCA. As a member of a small team, other duties and activities that contribute to the work of the SPCA will be required from time to time. Occasional travel and work after ordinary business hours will be required in this role. 

Key accountabilities

  • Prepare scientific and technical information and advice on animal welfare issues.
  • Develop SPCA policy and position papers, discussion papers, research reports, information sheets and articles relating to priority animal welfare issues.
  • Contribute to key advocacy campaigns. 
  • Prepare submissions pertaining to animal welfare to government and/or external organisations.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with government, industry and SPCA's to promote SPCA animal welfare policies through the use of science.
  • Prepare and deliver media responses/science communications on priority animal welfare issues.
  • Assist and lead animal welfare research and scientific projects to support the SPCA.

What we need from you 

Our ideal Candidate will have:

  • A proven interest in and knowledge of animal welfare. 
  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline, preferably a PhD in animal welfare. 
  • Experience in leading projects to completion. 
  • High degree of technical acumen. 
  • Well-developed research and analytical skills, including:
    • Experience in scientific research and in preparing and undertaking scientific investigation and analysis. 
    • Experience completing critical reviews of scientific literature and presenting summarised results. 
    • Experience of constructing scientific reports, papers, letters and information sheets. 
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with proven ability to be able to communicate complex scientific information to a broad range of audiences. 
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise own workload and to manage time efficiently under pressure.
  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively and to react quickly to a range of different demands. 
  • Ability to develop good working relationships with a wide variety of individuals and organisations. 
  • A strong interest in Science Communication and Human Behaviour Change. Qualifications or experience in one or both of these areas ideal.
  • A strong drive to make a meaningful improvement to the lives of animals
