Mō te tūraka mahi | About the role 

We are looking to appoint community minded, self-managing and resilient people with the special responsibility of Residential Tuākana in Te Pā Tauira, Otago Polytechnic’s Student Village. As a Residential Tuākana you will be a leader within our student community by:

  • providing pastoral support to first year tertiary students
  • creating, organising and running events for the community
  • monitoring and informing senior staff about community developments
  • undertaking general administration and reporting tasks.

Key to your success in this role will be your:

  • Ability to self-manage and organise your own workload
  • Resilience and self-care strategies which sustain your personal resilience. 
  • Genuine desire to support a diverse community
  • People focus and enjoyment in engaging and communicating with a diverse range of people
  • Understanding of professional boundaries in a support-based role.

As part of this role, you must be enrolled in full time study at Otago Polytechnic or Otago University for 2027 and be willing to live on-site.

You will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Excellent communication skills with a natural ability to engage and build relationships
  • Be an effective Te Tiriti o Waitangi partner by supporting the values and tikaka of mana whenua throughout your mahi  
  • Good computer literacy and ability to use full suite of Microsoft products (particularly Word, Excel and SharePoint/Teams). 
  • Pass a police check 
  • Ability to work in NZ 

You will have demonstrable health and safety best practices and enjoy being part of a team who support each other.  You will easily be able to build and maintain relationships.
