At FMG, our purpose is to support the success of rural New Zealand. As New Zealand's leading rural insurer and a proudly New Zealand-owned mutual, we're committed to helping our clients protect what's important and achieve their goals.

We're looking for a highly motivated Regulatory Affairs Specialist to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys working at the intersection of legislation, regulation, public policy, and business strategy, helping ensure FMG remains informed, compliant, and influential in an increasingly complex regulatory environment.

About the role

Working closely with the Senior Regulatory Affairs Manager, you'll play a key role in monitoring, analysing and responding to regulatory and legislative developments that impact FMG and our clients. You'll help ensure FMG remains well-positioned to navigate change while maintaining strong relationships with regulators, industry bodies, government stakeholders and internal business leaders.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Monitoring and analysing current and emerging legislative and regulatory developments.
  • Providing high-quality regulatory advice and recommendations to stakeholders across FMG.
  • Supporting regulatory submissions, consultation responses and industry advocacy initiatives.
  • Building and maintaining effective relationships with regulators, government agencies, industry bodies and internal stakeholders.
  • Representing FMG on industry forums and committees, including Insurance Council of New Zealand (ICNZ) and Financial Services Council (FSC) regulatory committees.
  • Assisting with regulatory projects, process improvements and business initiatives.
  • Helping ensure FMG's policies, processes and controls remain aligned with legislative and regulatory requirements.

About you

You'll be naturally curious, analytical and commercially minded, with a genuine interest in legislation, regulation and public policy. You'll enjoy translating complex information into practical advice and building trusted relationships across a wide range of stakeholders.

Ideally, you'll bring:

  • Experience in regulatory affairs, legal, compliance, government relations, public policy, financial services, insurance or a related environment.
  • Strong research, analysis and critical thinking capabilities.
  • Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to develop clear, concise and persuasive reports, submissions and recommendations.
  • Confidence engaging with a broad range of stakeholders and influencing outcomes.
  • Strong relationship-building skills and a collaborative approach.
  • The ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively in a changing environment.
  • A tertiary qualification in law or a related discipline would be advantageous.

Why FMG?

At FMG, we're proud of our people, our culture and our commitment to supporting rural New Zealand. We offer:

  • Meaningful work that contributes to the success of New Zealand's largest rural insurer.
  • A collaborative and supportive team environment.
  • Opportunities to work with senior leaders, regulators and industry stakeholders.
  • Ongoing professional development and career growth.
  • A values-led organisation where you'll be encouraged to do what's right, make it happen, work together and be proud of who we are.
