Southern Cross Gillies Hospital, in Epsom, is designed with a focus on short stay surgery and family-centred care. The hospital has four theatres, a purpose-built day-stay facility and 20 in-patient beds with ensuite facilities. A centre of expertise for head and neck surgery and otolaryngology (ENT), it also offers oral and maxillofacial, gynaecological, plastic and reconstructive and general paediatric surgery, backed up by friendly, highly professional nursing teams and systems designed to benefit patients of all ages. 

Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

We’re looking for an experienced and passionate Registered Nurse to join our In‑Patient Team in a 0.8 FTE role, with the flexibility to work rostered shifts Monday to Sunday. You will work across a range of clinical areas including pre‑admission, admission, day stay, ward, and our new Intermediate Care Facility. In this role, you’ll deliver safe, high‑quality, patient and whānau centred nursing care, drawing on your clinical expertise, critical thinking, and commitment to excellence as you move between different parts of the service to meet patient needs. You’ll bring strong assessment skills, confidence in managing emergency scenarios, a holistic approach to care, attention to detail of documentation within an electronic platform. You’ll guide, support, and monitor the care delivered to help foster a culturally sensitive, safe, and empowering environment for patients and whānau.

As a reflective practitioner, you’ll actively contribute to continuous improvement, assist with clinical and business-related activities, and play your part in project work and action plans that enhance service delivery. Collaboration is at the heart of this role: you’ll build relationships with patients and families, communicate with warmth and clarity, and work closely with colleagues and Medical Specialists to maintain a positive, high-performing team culture. You’ll champion safety and quality by meeting legislative and clinical practice standards, engaging in audits and corrective actions, and contributing to best practice improvements. 

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

  • Current New Zealand Registered Nurse practising certificate and a passion for delivering exceptional care
  • At least five years’ senior nursing experience within a surgical setting, with the confidence and capability to mentor and precept junior team members
  • A true team player with a proven ability to collaborate seamlessly within a multidisciplinary environment
  • Flexible and adaptable, able to work across all shifts from Monday to Sunday in our dynamic inpatient setting
  • Broad clinical experience, enabling capability working across Pre-assessment, Admitting, Day Stay, Ward.
  • Clinical expertise to work within our Intermediate care facility.
  • HDU/ICU experience not essential but highly valued, bringing advanced clinical skills to support our service delivery
  • Outstanding communication skills paired with a positive, proactive, can-do attitude
  • Experience in private healthcare is an advantage and helps you hit the ground running
  • Strong commitment to ongoing professional development, continually growing your skills and practice
  • Digitally confident and comfortable working within an electronic health record platform
  • Currently enrolled in an NCNZ-approved PDRP or working confidently toward Proficient/Expert level
