Southern Cross Christchurch Hospital is the largest hospital within Southern Cross Healthcare’s national network and easily accessed within central Christchurch. The hospital consists of ten digital operating theatres and features robotic technology with a highly experienced robotic team, advanced digital scanning technologies, and consulting facilities onsite. The hospital provides a first-class preadmission service, admissions services, day surgery and three inpatient wards including a high dependency area. The hospital offers a wide range of elective surgical services including Orthopaedic, Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Oral and Facial Maxillary, Urology, Otolaryngology (ENT), Plastic & Reconstructive, Bariatric, General, and Endoscopic surgery.  The hospital employs over 350 highly skilled and trained staff to ensure patients receive high quality care.

Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Registered Nurse to join our Theatre team, with 0.8 - 1.0 FTE available for the right candidate. In this role you will be delivering planned, specialist surgical care across General Surgery, Gynaecology, and Urology. This is a perioperative-focused position working in our modern surgical hospital where clinical excellence, patient safety, and teamwork underpin everything we do.

In this role, you will provide skilled, compassionate nursing care throughout the surgical patient journey, including patient admission and preparation, intraoperative support, and postoperative recovery and discharge. Working closely with surgeons, anaesthetists, and the multidisciplinary theatre team, you will contribute to the safe, efficient flow of elective surgical lists and the delivery of high-quality surgical outcomes.

This role is ideal for a nurse who enjoys the pace and precision of the operating theatre environment and values professional autonomy and continued learning. You’ll work within a supportive team culture that encourages skill development, collaboration, and ongoing education in perioperative practice.

This is a full-time, permanent role with 0.8 - 1 FTE available.  

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

  • A NZ Registered Nurse with a current Practising Certificate  
  • Recent acute surgical nursing experience, ideally within General Surgery, Gynaecology, and/or Urology 
  • Sound knowledge of peri‑operative care, post‑operative recovery, and discharge planning 
  • Commitment to patient‑centred care, safety, and evidence‑based practice 
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team 
  • Strong organisational skills, adaptability, and attention to detail in a busy surgical environment 
  • Confidence using clinical documentation systems and hospital information technology 
  • PDRP proficient or expert levels (or working towards it), reflecting your commitment to continuous growth and best-practice nursing
