Southern Cross Christchurch Hospital is the largest hospital within Southern Cross Healthcare’s national network and easily accessed within central Christchurch. The hospital consists of ten digital operating theatres and features robotic technology with a highly experienced robotic team, advanced digital scanning technologies, and consulting facilities onsite.

The hospital provides a first-class preadmission service, admissions services, day surgery and three inpatient wards including a high dependency area. The hospital offers a wide range of elective surgical services including Orthopaedic, Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Oral and Facial Maxillary, Urology, Otolaryngology (ENT), Plastic & Reconstructive, Bariatric, General, and Endoscopic surgery.  The hospital employs over 350 highly skilled and trained staff to ensure patients receive high-quality care.

Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

Southern Cross Christchurch Hospital is looking for a passionate Registered Nurse to join our high-performing Theatre team, with 0.8–1.0 FTE available. This is more than just another theatre role; it’s your opportunity to work at the leading edge of surgical innovation in one of New Zealand’s most advanced digital operating environments.

With ten fully digital theatres and a specialised robotic surgery programme, you’ll be part of a team redefining what’s possible in-patient care. From complex orthopaedic, spinal and neurosurgical robotics to cutting-edge digital scanning technologies, you’ll support procedures that truly change lives. Our caseload is diverse and rewarding, covering everything from primary and complex joint replacements (hips, knees and shoulders) to sports orthopaedics, acute injury repair, and high-volume elective surgery.

As a Theatre Registered Nurse, you’ll play a pivotal role in delivering outstanding perioperative care. Bringing together your clinical expertise, sound judgement, and adaptability, you’ll help ensure every patient receives safe, seamless, high-quality care. You’ll collaborate closely with surgeons, anaesthetists and colleagues, contributing to a culture that values teamwork, innovation, and continuous improvement.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

  • A NZ Registered Nurse with a current Practising Certificate and a drive for excellence in perioperative nursing
  • At least 2–3 years’ experience in orthopaedic theatre nursing, including both scrubbing and circulating
  • PDRP at proficient or expert level (or working towards it), demonstrating your commitment to high standards and professional growth
  • Excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach, with the ability to thrive in a multidisciplinary environment
  • A proactive and adaptable mindset, and someone who stays composed under pressure
  • Strong organisational skills and a practical, solutions-focused attitude
  • Enthusiasm for working with advanced technology, including robotic surgery and modern digital theatre systems
