Toi Ohomai is seeking a capable and confident People Advisor – Industrial and Employment Relations to join our People, Culture and Wellbeing team. 

This role is part of a newly formed People, Culture and Wellbeing team, established following organisational change to strengthen capability, clarify accountabilities, and support a sustainable, future‑focused operating model. 

The role is a mid‑level people advisory position with delegated responsibility for first‑level industrial and employment relations support across an allocated portfolio of Schools and Directorates. Working in close partnership with a People Business Partner, the role contributes to both generalist people advisory delivery and specialist portfolio activity. 

You will play a key role in stabilising and strengthening people practice across Toi Ohomai by delivering high‑quality, timely and compliant advice, documentation and coordination across the employment lifecycle, while also contributing to the development and implementation of people frameworks, policies and standards. 

The position reports structurally to the Head of People and Safety and has a functional reporting relationship to the People Business Partner – Employment and Industrial Relations. 

Ngā mahi | Key Responsibilities 

Generalist People Advisory (Allocated Portfolios) 

  • Provide first level advisory support across employment relations, industrial relations, performance, absence and change processes. 
  • Triage and manage people queries through the People and Culture inbox. 
  • Prepare employment agreements, variations and people documentation ensuring legislative and organisational compliance. 
  • Coordinate onboarding and exit processes to ensure a consistent kaimahi experience. 

Specialist Portfolio – Industrial and Employment Relations 

This portfolio includes first‑level support across individual and collective employment matters, with escalation to the People Business Partner for complex or high-risk issues. 

  • Support delivery of ER/IR frameworks, policies and standards 
  • Provide first‑level documentation and process support for ER, IR, conflict management and performance processes 
  • Support wellbeing and people policy administration aligned to this portfolio 
  • Participate in projects and initiatives linked to employment relations, performance frameworks and change activity 

He kōrero mōu | About You 

You are an experienced and organised HR practitioner who is confident operating in a complex, changing environment and balancing advisory, coordination and portfolio responsibilities. 

You will bring: 

  • Experience in generalist HR or people advisory roles within a medium to large organisation 
  • Sound knowledge of NZ employment relations and legislative frameworks 
  • Strong drafting, documentation and coordination capability 
  • Confidence providing first level IR/ER advice with appropriate escalation 
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills 
  • High attention to detail and integrity when working with sensitive information 
  • A genuine commitment to equity, inclusive practice and Te Tiriti o Waitangi
