Mō te tūranga: About the role
We are looking for volunteers for our Nutrition Centre, where we prepare and provide the daily diets for all animals. We collaborate closely with our veterinarians and animal keepers to ensure that diets are up to date and meet nutritional requirements.    

As a volunteer, you will play an important role in supporting the Zoo to provide the highest standards of animal care and welfare.  

Please note you will not have any hands-on animal contact. 

A number of tasks are strenuous and dirty, and in cold conditions, and you can be on your feet a lot of the time.  An idea of the things you might be asked to do includes: 

• Food preparation (vegetable and meat) 
• Stock taking 
• Assisting with receiving deliveries 
• Stock rotating 
• Cleaning

Volunteers are only required during the usual working week: Monday to Friday.  The earliest you would start is 9:30 am, and the latest finish time is 4:30 pm.

• Friendly and happy to interact with people of all ages and backgrounds. 
• Team player and reliable. 
• Have a good level of fitness (we are on a hill). 
• Able to manage physical work 
• Able to work in a colder environment 
• Willing and able to help with tasks regardless of what they are. 
• Prepared to follow directions on how and what to do.
• Can commit to at least 4 hours per fortnight. 
• You are 18 years of age or above.

Please note the following: 

• Our process for you and for us to assess whether the work will suit you is to offer an information session to selected applicants. If that goes well, we will arrange a few hours' trial assessment in the Nutrition Centre, followed by an interview.   
• If offered a volunteer role, you will be required to undergo a criminal record check and a pre-employment drug and alcohol test. We arrange these for you through relevant providers.
