Mō mātou: About us

At Te Nukuao Wellington Zoo we are guided by our kaupapa  “Me tiaki, kia ora!” – we must look after our environment so all life will flourish.  We punch above our weight in leading the way through connecting people with animals, saving animals in the wild and ensuring we’re a voice to be heard.

Mō te tūranga: About the role

We are looking for volunteers for our Nutrition Centre where we prepare and provide the daily diets for all animals. We collaborate closely with our veterinarians and animal keepers to ensure diets are current and meet nutritional requirements.    As a Volunteer you will play an important role in supporting the Zoo to provide the highest standards of animal care and welfare.

It is important to note our volunteers do not have any hands-on animal contact.

Some of the tasks can be strenuous and dirty and you can be on your feet a lot of the time. An idea of the things you might be asked to do include:

  • Food preparation (vegetable and meat)
  • Stock taking
  • Assisting with deliveries
  • Stock rotating
  • Cleaning

Volunteers are only required Monday to Friday.  The earliest you would start is 9:30am and the latest finish time is 4:30pm.

He kōrero mōu: About you

  • Friendly and happy to interact with people of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Team player and reliable.
  • Have a good level of fitness (we are on a hill).
  • Willing and able to help with tasks regardless of what they are.
  • Prepared to follow direction on how and what to do.
  • Can commit to at least 4 hours per fortnight.
  • Able to provide proof of COVID 19 vaccination.
  • You are 18 years of age or above.

Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou: What we offer

  • An enjoyable and varied place to be.
  • A chance to walk about the Zoo and see the animals.
  • Great stories
  • Work alongside dedicated, passionate and welcoming colleagues.
  • Zoo Crew membership
  • A volunteer T-shirt.

Please note the following:

  • If offered a volunteer role you will need to complete a Ministry of Justice Police Check and a Drug and Alcohol Test which we arrange for you through relevant providers.
  • Applications will be reviewed regularly throughout the advertising period.
  • Our process is to interview and if that goes well, from there we arrange an assessment day trial in the Nutrition Centre.  This enables both you and us to check the work suits you. Reference checks are also undertaken before any volunteering offers are made.
  • If you have any support or access requirements, we encourage you to tell us when you apply so we can assist you through the recruitment process.

Please contact people&culture@wellingtonzoo.com if you have any questions about the opportunity or our process.
