To support the delivery of the Napier Port Transformation (NPT) programme, we are seeking expressions of interest for a Fixed Term opportunity as an Operations Assistant.

This role works closely with the container planning team and NPT team to support day-to-day terminal operations and the transition to new ways of working, particularly during the manual truck driving phase, where increased coordination and radio traffic management is required.

Based in the Operations Office, you will work between day and afternoon shifts (predominantly Monday to Friday), with possible flexibility required, as part of a rotating operations assistant model. The role supports both the Planning Team and Autonomous Truck Operators (ATOs), ensuring smooth operational flow through effective coordination, communication, and real-time problem solving.

You will act as a key link between frontline operations and planning, managing RT communications to enable the Planning Team to remain focused on yard and vessel planning priorities, while also contributing to trainee planner-type activities, troubleshooting, and supporting the wider operation through the transition.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

Duration: 6 months
Dates: 03 August 2026 to 15 January 2027
Reporting to: Operations Supervisor- Planning

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Act as the first point of contact via RT for frontline operations, managing real-time communication using clear radio protocols and phonetic alphabet 
  • Support real-time coordination and triaging of operational issues across the container terminal 
  • Work closely with the Planning Team and ATOs to maintain safe and efficient operational flow, particularly during the manual truck driving phase 
  • Monitor operations and traffic flow using Fleet Management Systems (FMS) and provide basic support in XPS and Navis N4 
  • Troubleshoot and resolve operational issues where possible, escalating to Planning when required 
  • Support planning activities and free up Planning Team capacity to focus on yard and vessel planning priorities 
  • Deliver effective stakeholder communication and customer service across terminal operations 
  • Provide ongoing operational support through to the end of the secondment (15 January 2027) and contribute to evolving team needs

  • Ability to quickly learn new systems and processes, including Navis N4 and the AT Fleet Management System
