About the Role:

Port Otago has a rare opportunity for a suitably experienced Mobile Plant Mechanic to work within our Maintenance team as a Mechanical Fitter on a permanent full-time basis.

Our Maintenance team are responsible for a range of responsibilities including (but not limited to): 

  • Providing electrical and mechanical maintenance support within Port Otago, across a range of assets such as our Ship to Shore Cranes, mobile fleet including our straddle carriers, empty handlers and a range of marine, fixed plant and ancillary equipment. 
  • Safe maintenance and servicing activities on all our Port Otago assets. 
  • Preventative maintenance from detailed task documentation including regular equipment servicing and inspections, repairing identified defects, conducting modern diagnostic fault finding and working unsupervised. 
  • Assisting with equipment upgrades, not just installation and commissioning but also to provide input for the design and build.

Work Allocation:

Our Maintenance team provides 24-hour technical support to Container Vessel operation activities based on shipping schedules and planned maintenance activities. As part of our team, you will be provided with an indicative weekly roster each Friday. 

  • A GDO (guaranteed day off).
  • Confirmed roster for Sat/Sun/Mon.
  • Indicative roster for Tues/Wed/Thu/Fri (with actual roster confirmed by 1500 day prior).
  • Guaranteed minimum of 40 hours each week (4 x 10-hour shifts or 5 x 8-hour shifts depending on your team rotation).
  • Indicative notice if overtime shifts may be required (up to 50 hours) which are typically needed during our peak season.

About You: 

Our ideal candidate must have a qualification in a fitting trade, and experience working with heavy mobile and fixed plant equipment. They will also be able to demonstrate the following: 

  • Qualifications/Experience in Auto Electrical and PLC diagnostics would be highly desirable 
  • General machining and welding experience is desirable
  • Structured technical problem-solving abilities using root cause methodology.
  • Knowledge of working with modern maintenance management systems
  • Ability to provide detailed written & verbal shift handover details and work history
  • Knowledge of computerised systems. E.g., Windows, Maximo and Microsoft Office.
  • Demonstrate an ability to achieve results within a performance focused team
  • Experience in working at height and the safe use of elevated work platforms and fall restraint systems.
  • A true passion for Health & Safety including excellent personal safety standards.

Heads up: 

  • A full clean NZ Drivers licence is required. 
  • You must be able to pass Ministry of Justice, ACC checks and a medical which includes a drug and alcohol test as part of our recruitment process.
  • We complete random drug and alcohol testing on a weekly basis.
