Mental Health Support Worker – Fixed Term (Maternity Leave Cover)

Te Whare Rata | WALSH Trust – Older Adult Respite & Residential Service
Full-time | Rotating roster (AM & PM shifts)
Fixed term: 9 September 2026 – 27 April 2027

At WALSH Trust, everything we do is grounded in a simple belief: every person has the right to a meaningful, fulfilling life, and the potential to live it.

We are looking for a compassionate, committed Mental Health Support Worker to join our Te Whare Rata team in a fixed-term role covering maternity leave. This is a unique opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of older adults, while being part of a team that truly looks after one another.

About the role

This is a full-time position working across a rotating roster, alternating between morning (AM) and afternoon/evening (PM) shifts, supporting continuity of care in our residential and respite service.

Working in Te Whare Rata, you will support older adults who have experienced mental health challenges, trauma, or significant life changes. Your role is to build meaningful relationships that inspire hope, recovery, and a sense of belonging.

You will:

  • Work alongside people and their whānau to understand what matters most to them
  • Co-design and implement support plans that reflect each person’s goals and aspirations
  • Support daily living activities and help create a warm, safe, and homely environment
  • Promote wellbeing across all aspects of life – physical, emotional, social, and spiritual
  • Encourage connection, independence, and participation in community life
  • Work collaboratively within a supportive, values-driven team

This role goes beyond “providing care”, it is about walking alongside people as partners in their recovery journey.

About you

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has a Level 4 Mental Health and Wellbeing certificate, or equivalent
  • Brings empathy, kindness, and respect to every interaction
  • Has a genuine passion for supporting people to live meaningful lives
  • Is a team player who values collaboration and shared responsibility
  • Can build trusting, respectful relationships with people and whānau
  • Has experience in mental health, aged care, or a related field (or a strong willingness to learn)
  • Is adaptable, organised, and able to respond to changing needs
  • Demonstrates understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles in practice

We welcome people with lived experience of mental health challenges and recovery, and those who can bring this insight to support others.

Why join WALSH Trust?

We care deeply about our people, both those we support and those who work with us.

You can expect:

  • A genuinely supportive, inclusive team culture
  • A workplace where courtesy, respect, integrity, kindness and Kotahitanga are lived every day
  • Opportunities for professional development and growth
  • Regular coaching, supervision, and team connection
  • A role where you will see the difference you make, every day

At WALSH Trust, we don’t just talk about wellbeing, we practice it.

What we offer

  • Full-time, fixed-term opportunity (9 Sept 2026 – 27 April 2027)
  • Rotating roster across AM and PM shifts
  • Meaningful, relationship-focused work
  • A chance to be part of a service that is transforming lives
