Our role at Antarctica New Zealand is to support world-leading science and environmental protection in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Scott Base is the hub of New Zealand's activities in Antarctica and each year, we employ seasonal staff to manage base activity and support science in the field.

Mō te mahi | About the role - What you’ll be doing

It takes a passionate, diverse, and highly skilled team to run Scott Base. 

Our Medic is responsible for providing holistic care to address health needs and promote wellness, as well as providing the first response for all medical emergencies at Scott Base. In addition, you will support the Domestic Services team with cleaning and domestic duties throughout the summer season.

 This is a summer role for approx. 6 months, from August 2026 to February 2027

Key Responsibilities Include:  

  • Providing high quality medical care and emergency medical response for Scott Base personnel (either on base or in the field)
  • Prescribing medication appropriate to patient needs, within scope of practice
  • Supporting the development and implementation of wellbeing initiatives
  • Liaison with external medical staff
  • Medical stock management and report writing
  • Ensure all common areas, bathrooms and work areas are maintained in a clean and hygienic       condition
  • Preparing bedrooms for occupation and undertaking laundry duties
  • Contributing positively to the overall base community culture and assist with proactively       identifying community needs
  • Serving on the Scott Base Fire Crew

We’re looking for a highly motivated person to join our close-knit, passionate and supportive team.

Skills and Experience Include:  

  • Nurse Practitioner or Nurse Prescriber preferred, however applicants with a Bachelor of Nursing       or Paramedicine will be considered
  • Relevant NZ registration  
  • Membership of a professional body for Indemnity Insurance
  • Wilderness, rural or remote healthcare experience 
  • Commercial cleaning or housekeeping experience
  • Ability to demonstrate a strong customer service focus and communicate effectively and       empathetically with superior interpersonal skills
  • Current full NZ Class 1 driver’s licence and ability to drive a manual vehicle
