The MPTT Work Broker proactively establishes and maintains strong relationships with employers, industry, and community groups to facilitate the transition of ākonga into sustainable vocational pathways. This role is dedicated to supporting Māori and Pacific ākonga (aged 16–40) who are MPTT Scholarship recipients, in achieving positive outcomes from pre-trades training.

These outcomes include progression into New Zealand Apprenticeships, relevant work-based vocational training, or further provider-based higher-level learning that leads to strong employment prospects. The role focuses on driving equitable outcomes by matching the talents and aspirations of ākonga with responsive employer requirements and educational pathways, ensuring transitions are culturally grounded and community responsive.

Ārahi | Lead

• Pathway Excellence: Shapes and strengthens stakeholder relationships to foster meaningful transitions for ākonga between Toi Ohomai, iwi, Pacific communities, and industry partners.
• Adaptive Alignment: Leads the tailoring of pre-employment trades provision to meet both the specific aspirations of ākonga and the shifting demands of the regional workforce.
• Strategic Matching: Proactively identifies employment or higher-level learning opportunities that best suit the available talent pool of Māori and Pacific job seekers.

Ngā mahi | Do

• Brokerage & Placement: Match the talents of ākonga with suitable employer requirements and facilitate transitions into apprenticeships, sustainable employment, or further academic study.
• Labour Market Navigation: Gather and utilise labour market intelligence to understand regional trends, skills gaps, and growth opportunities, ensuring advice to ākonga remains relevant.
• Employer Partnership: Proactively partner with employers to identify workforce needs, providing insights and advocacy to influence recruitment and retention practices that support Māori and      Pacific ākonga success.
• Events & Industry Engagement: Initiate, coordinate, and/or facilitate employment events, expos, and industry networking opportunities to bridge the gap between ākonga and potential employers, creating visible and accessible career pathways.
• Support & Mentoring: Provide guidance and post-placement support to both ākonga and employers to identify and resolve issues, ensuring sustainable and positive outcomes.
• Bridging & Pathways: Collaborate with internal teams to staircase ākonga into higher-level vocational training or bridging programmes that align with their career goals.
• Outcome Monitoring: Use data and ‘ākonga voice’ to identify barriers to success and provide targeted, evidence-based support to overcome them. 

Pūkenga | Have

• Qualifications: A relevant qualification in education, Māori development, recruitment, or a related field; or equivalent experience in the employment or vocational training sector.
• Sector Insight: Comprehensive knowledge of current trends in the labour market and the trades industry in Aotearoa New Zealand.
• Cultural Competency: Confidence in te kawa me ngā tikanga and a demonstrated commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi practices.
• Relationship Management: Proven ability to build and maintain strong, trusting partnerships with diverse stakeholders, including iwi, Pacific entities, and industry bodies.
• Communication: Highly effective communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to advocate for Māori and Pacific success across all levels of industry.

Key Performance Indicators

• Pathway Progression: Achievement of targets for ākonga entry into employment, New Zealand Apprenticeships, work-based training (level 3 or higher), or higher-level provider-based study (level 4 or higher).
• Partnership Growth: Evidence of maintained partnerships with employers and providers committed to equitable outcomes for Māori and Pacific ākonga.
• Equity Targets: Contribution to institutional and consortium aspirational targets, including those for female participation in trades.
• Ākonga Success: Demonstrable evidence that ākonga are supported into pathways that match their individual needs and career goals.

Skills & Experience

A full drivers licence is necessary. 

An ability to cold-call and engage new and existing markets for employment opportunities for students of Toi Ohomai.
