About the role 

We have a part-time opportunity available for a Legal Counsel. This role will join our in-house legal team, and work closely with the Head of Legal and Senior Legal Counsel to provide pragmatic, solutions focused advice across all areas of our international business, playing a key role in providing guidance to balance legal and commercial risk. The scope of this role is broad and diverse, including: 

  • Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating various commercial contracts, as well as providing guidance on contracts throughout their lifecycle.
  • Offering legal advice in relation to business and consumer law matters, including the Consumer Guarantees Act (CGA), Fair Trading Act (FTA), privacy concerns, advertising regulations, health and safety, property, intellectual property, employment, and legislative compliance.
  • Identifying potential legal risks associated with business activities or ongoing operations and developing strategies to address these risks.
  • Supporting general legal compliance and governance functions, and informing the business of relevant legislative and regulatory updates.
  • Contributing to the development, revision, and communication of internal policies, and assisting with governance processes such as board reporting and staff training.

What we are looking for

  • NZ qualified and admitted lawyer with a minimum of 4 years' PQE
  • Relevant experience in a law firm or in-house role in commercial/business law.
  • Experience in drafting and negotiating a variety of contracts 
  • Experience providing pragmatic, solution-focused and commercially sound legal advice.
  • Ability to work independently and take responsibility for the legal role throughout all stages of the process.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills
  • Strong stakeholder management skills 
  • Eager to learn and improve processes
