The opportunity | Te Whiwhinga mahi

UCOL is seeking a passionate and learner-centred Learner Advisor to support academic success, engagement, and progression, with a strong focus on Māori and Pacific learners.

This role sits at the heart of UCOL’s learner support ecosystem, working closely with kaiako, academic teams, and student support services to strengthen learner capability and outcomes. The Learner Advisor plays a critical role in supporting learners to navigate tertiary study and develop the academic skills, confidence, and independence required for success.

The role | Te tūranga

The Learner Advisor is a key conduit between academic teaching and learner outcomes. Working in partnership with kaiako and academic teams, the role supports learners to translate teaching into understanding, confidence, and academic success.

Learner Advisors deliver one-to-one appointments, group sessions, in-class support, and targeted workshops that enhance learner capability, engagement, and independence. Support is strengths-based, culturally responsive, and grounded in relationship-building.

Key areas of focus | Ngā aronga matua

  • Provide individualised academic learning support through one-to-one advising
  • Facilitate group and class-based sessions aligned to programme needs
  • Design and deliver workshops that build core academic skills, including:
    • APA referencing and academic integrity
    • Time management and study planning
    • Assessment interpretation and preparation
    • Research, writing, and learning strategies
  • Support learners to develop confidence, autonomy, and effective learning habits
  • Work alongside kaiako to reinforce learning outcomes and respond to emerging learner needs
  • Enhance learner experience through proactive, inclusive, and mana-enhancing practices
  • Advocate and facilitate referrals to pastoral care, wellbeing, or specialist services when additional support is required

Learner-centred approach

Support is delivered through a holistic lens, recognising that academic success is influenced by wellbeing, culture, identity, and life context. Learner Advisors actively create culturally safe spaces where Māori, Pacific, and Neurodiverse learners feel seen, supported, and empowered to succeed.

About you | He kōrero mōu

You are a relationship-focused practitioner with a strong commitment to learner success and equity in tertiary education. You bring cultural awareness, adaptability, and confidence working in dynamic learning environments.

You will bring:

  • Experience supporting learners in education, learning support, advising, or community-based roles
  • A clear understanding of Te Ao Māori, tikanga Māori, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi
  • Awareness  of Pacific values and learner contexts, or a willingness to grow capability in this space
  • Confidence supporting learners with complex academic needs, and the ability to advocate and refer learners experiencing personal or social challenges to appropriate support services
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and relationship-building skills
  • The ability to work collaboratively with academic and professional staff

Qualifications

  • A  relevant qualification (Bachelor’s degree preferred) or equivalent experience
  • Experience in a tertiary education environment is desirable but not essential
  • Confidence in te reo Māori and/or Pacific languages is an advantage, or a willingness to learn and use them
