Kaitiaki Ākonga
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Te Mana Tauira: Student Success Whanganui working within the Raukura team. We are seeking someone who is passionate about learner success to fill the role of Kaitiaki Ākonga. This role is a full-time permanent role based at the UCOL Whanganui Campus.
The Kaitiaki Ākonga role drives Māori and Pasifika learner engagement and achievement in their programme of study through service delivery that maximises the success of all learners. This role supports ākonga to navigate and overcome any challenges by connecting them to the right services. The Kaitiaki Ākonga role promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion, with a strong focus on Māori and Pasifika learners and other priority learners. Kaitiaki Ākonga support educational outcomes through culturally responsive, data-informed strategies, that embody the model of Te Whare Tapa Whā.
The ideal candidate will be solution focused with experience in te reo Māori and tikanga Māori.
Skills/attributes
• Experience in learner engagement and support (typically 3-5 years), ideally within education or community-based settings, supporting diverse learner cohorts.
• A strong understanding of Māori and Pacific learner success, with the ability to work in culturally responsive ways grounded in Te Ao Māori.
• A relevant tertiary qualification (or equivalent experience) in Education, Social Work, Youth Advocacy, Matauranga Māori, or a related field.
• Confidence using learner data, reporting tools, and systems to inform practice and support educational outcomes.
• Well-developed relationship-building and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams.
• A demonstrated commitment to equity, Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles, and inclusive practices, with the ability to refer and advocate for priority learners in a professional setting.
