We are seeking a part-time (0.5FTE), permanent Kaiarahi in Early Childhood Education and Care, based at our Manawatū campus, to teach on our Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) and associated programmes. This is a dual Kairahi/Lecturer role. As Kairahi, you will be providing mentoring and learning support through Te Kākano and strengthening partnerships with Iwi and Pasifika.
This position would suit a passionate individual who is committed to student success and the development of future kaiako in Aotearoa’s early childhood sector. As a member of UCOL's Early Childhood Team, you will have the opportunity to inspire others, share knowledge, and support ākonga to achieve their goal of becoming a qualified early childhood teacher. This position requires you to engage, support and motivate students to develop both their understanding of, and confidence to use, their knowledge of Te Reo Māori and Tikanga within appropriate settings. You will also be required to support the development and maintenance of strong stakeholder relationships with Hapū and Iwi groups across Rohe, and Pasifika, to the development of genuine partnerships to support delivery of the ECE degree.
Skills / attributes:
- It is highly preferred that you have a high level of Cultural Competency, relevant Tertiary Teaching Experience and be proficient in Te Reo with the ability to facilitate the learning of students in developing their Te Reo skills.
- Comfortable and competent to provide mentoring and understanding of cultural competencies
- Demonstrates strong cultural competency in Te Ao Māori and/or Pacific language, values and practices
- Can integrate mātauranga Māori and Pacific knowledge throughout curriculum delivery
- Builds inclusive and respectful learning environments that reflect the diverse identities of our ākonga and their whānau
- Models culturally responsive pedagogy and contributes to ongoing improvements in equitable teaching practice
- Ability to support and maintain strong stakeholder relationships with Hapū and Iwi groups across Rohe, and Pasifika.
Key Responsibilities. The successful applicant will be responsible for:
- Development and delivery of learning material at a degree level, both leading and facilitating student learning
- Delivering courses within the te ao Maori strand of the programme
- Maintaining academic and practicum placement records and ensuring compliance with the Children’s Act and Teaching Council requirements
- Providing pastoral and academic support to students tracking progress and offering targeted support
- Undertaking assessment within placement/practicum environments
- Supporting programme marketing initiatives and student recruitment
- Engaging in and contributing to research that informs teaching practice
- Building and maintaining strong relationships with ECE centres, iwi, hapū, and community stakeholders
Qualifications and skills we are looking for:
- Experience teaching (preferably early childhood setting and/or tertiary teaching in Early Childhood Education) would be an advantage
- Culturally competent, with demonstrated commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, equity, and inclusion
- Strong relationship-building and communication skills, including across diverse cultures
- Team player with a solution-focused and collaborative mindset
- NZ full driver’s licence
- Completed or working toward a Master’s qualification is preferred
