Ko wai mātou | About us as an organisation

At Te Kura Matatini ki Otago/Otago Polytechnic, we are committed to attracting, developing and retaining kaimahi (staff) who are passionate, creative, future-focused and dedicated to help set the direction for quality vocational and applied learning to meet tomorrow’s needs.

We are guided by our values and we are proud to be Rainbow Tick certified. We aspire to create a working environment that is inclusive and meets the aspirations of mana whenua ensuring equity for Māori and increasing access for all.

Mō te tūraka mahi | About the role

We’re looking for experienced information technology professionals who are ready to share their practical knowledge, industry insights and enthusiasm with ākonga.

Our Bachelor of Information Technology is known for its applied approach, strong industry connections and project-focused learning. Each semester, ākonga bring their learning together through an experiential Studio course, developing practical capability alongside teamwork, professionalism and self-directed learning skills.

As an Information Technology Lecturer, you will:

  • Prepare and deliver engaging course content
  • Teach both theoretical concepts and practical IT skills
  • Use a range of teaching approaches to create outstanding learning experiences
  • Support ākonga with projects, assessments and their wider learning journey
  • Assess and provide constructive feedback on learner work
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to develop and review courses
  • Help ensure our programmes remain current and connected to industry practice
  • Provide appropriate pastoral support to ākonga
  • Deliver face-to-face and blended learning
  • Contribute to our international teaching partnership in China

A particularly exciting part of these roles is the opportunity to contribute to Otago Institute, the joint education programme between Otago Polytechnic and Hunan Institute of Engineering in Xiangtan, China. You will teach information technology courses in English and bring our practical, applied approach to an international learning environment. These positions require the ability and willingness to travel to China at least twice each year, for approximately two months at a time.

You don’t need to come from a teaching background. If you enjoy explaining how things work, supporting others to develop and seeing people succeed, this could be the career move you’ve been looking for.

Ko wai koe | About you

You’ll bring recent, relevant experience from the information technology industry and a genuine interest in helping others learn and succeed.

We welcome applications from people across a range of IT disciplines. Experience in areas such as software development, game development, agile, AI, networking, cybersecurity, cloud technologies, databases, systems analysis or applied computing would be valuable.

You will also bring:

· A relevant tertiary qualification in information technology

· Recent professional experience within the IT industry

· A strong commitment to learner success

· Excellent communication and relationship-building skills

· The ability to make technical concepts clear, practical and engaging

· A collaborative approach and willingness to contribute as part of a supportive team

· Confidence using contemporary digital and Microsoft 365 tools

· A commitment to safe and inclusive working practices

· A willingness to develop your teaching capability

· The ability and willingness to meet the international travel requirements of the role

· Previous tertiary teaching experience would be an advantage, but it is not essential.

If you haven’t taught before, don’t let that stop you from applying. A recognised tertiary teaching qualification, or a willingness to work towards one, forms part of the role expectations, and support is available to help you gain this qualification.

The successful applicant will uphold our organisation’s commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi by continuously developing and upholding your understanding of our obligations and connection with Te Tiriti as an individual and as an organisation

Through recognition, empowerment and inclusion, you will give greater acknowledgement to the unmet needs of Māori, Pasifika and disabled people and their whanau.

You will have demonstrable health and safety best practices and enjoy being part of a team who support each other.  You will easily be able to build and maintain relationships and communicate well via email, phone and face-to-face.
