Are you a passionate and experienced early childhood leader ready to inspire a team and nurture our youngest learners? BestStart Wattle Downs is looking for a Head Teacher to lead our Infant Room (0–2.5 years) and support both tamariki and kaiako to thrive.

In this role, you will provide strong educational and people leadership, mentor and support your teaching team, and guide the delivery of high-quality, play-based learning experiences. You’ll work closely with whānau and centre leadership to ensure our infants grow in a safe, nurturing, and responsive environment.

Our centre is located near the peaceful Wattle Downs Pond, creating a warm community feel with local schools and shops nearby. At the heart of our philosophy is Nurture - we believe children flourish when they feel safe, valued, and supported through meaningful relationships and learning experiences.

Permanent role – 40 hours per week (Monday–Friday).

 Key Responsibilities include:

  • Leading and supporting educators
  • ensuring a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment
  • Supporting curriculum planning and daily practice.
  • building positive relationships with families.

We’re Looking For:

  • A Bachelor of Education/Diploma in Teaching (ECE) – Level 7
  • A current Teaching Certification/Registration (NZ)
  • A strong understanding of the child-led curriculum, and a passion for extending learning through play
  • Excellent knowledge of Te Whāriki, ECE regulations, and compliance
  • A deep commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi in daily practice
  • Someone who brings energy, empathy, and a focus on quality teaching and learning

About You

  • BEd/Dip Teaching Level 7 (ECE or Primary) and current Full Teacher Registration
  • Strong understanding of Te Whāriki, ECE regulations, and programme planning
  • A confident, supportive leader who enjoys mentoring others
  • Passion for providing high-quality care and education for infants
