Here at Rail and Maritime Transport Union, we are passionate for all transport workers to get treated fairly. We are a union for all transport workers.

We are a small tight knit team who strive on delivering for our 5,000 plus members. Our structure allows all members the opportunity to be fully involved in a democratic union whilst collective decisions are being made. 

Our vision is to continue to support our members and grow our membership. Our members health and safety is a priority and we are involved though out the rail and port industries in a number of roles including lobbying and education.

About the role

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced organiser who is enthusiastic about unionism and collective bargaining to be based in Christchurch. This role is a sole charge position that reports directly to our General Secretary who is based in Wellington. 

The successful applicant will be responsible for organising and supporting our South Island port and rail branch members, excluding Nelson and Marlborough. 

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

• Visiting job sites on a planned basis to establish and maintain a high profile.
• Retaining and growing the union’s membership and resources.
• Undertake negotiations with the objective of achieving an optimum outcome for members.
• Manage all personal grievances and enforcement of terms and conditions of employment. 

Successful applicants will have:  

• Thorough understanding of industrial and employment matters. 
• Excellent negotiation and interpersonal skills.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
• A valid, clean New Zealand driver’s licence 
• The ability to travel frequently. 
• Having first-hand knowledge of the Port and Rail industries would be an advantage.
