Whare Matua - Te Parehiua

Te Parehuia, is our Residential Care Service providing young people with a welcoming home and day to day aroha, professional care, stability, structure, social and cultural wellbeing.   The home is managed 24 hours a day - 7 days a week. 

We are looking for a Permanent kaimahi to cover our Day shift and we are looking for a Fixed Term kaimahi to cover Day shift while we have a kaimahi on parental leave till early August 2026.  We have 12 hour shifts from 7am to 7pm (Day shift) and 7pm to 7am (Night shift), 7 days a week.

The Permanent role is Dayshift from 06:45am to 19:00pm. This includes 15mins handover between shifts.

Week 1 Wednesday to Saturday

Week 2 Thursday to Saturday 

84 hours fortnightly

The Fixed term is Dayshift  from 06:45am to 19:00pm.  This includes 15mins handover between shifts.

The key responsibilities are to: 

  • Provide aroha and day to day cares for the health and well-being of tamariki and rangatahi according to their age and needs
  • Provide a peaceful, relaxed and safe home environment for tamariki, rangatahi and all staff. 
  • Support tamariki to develop personal life skills, continue with their usual routines and achieve their goals and milestones like school, education, health, connecting with whānau and other positive activities
  • Implement kawa and tikanga into daily routines
  • Run the household as your own with regular cleaning, laundry, food shopping and gardening for the home
  • Work with the Team Manager and Counsellor to discuss child behaviour and appropriate parenting strategies.
  • Ensure thorough handover notes, alerts, updates and information is passed to the kaimahi on the next shift.

Suitable applicants will have:

  • Previous experience or employment in youth or cares support, especially with tamariki who have lived in high stress, traumatic home environments. 
  • A tertiary qualification in Youth Work and/or Health and Wellbeing Level 3 or similar qualification
  • A current First Aid Certificate (ideally)
  • A Full, current Drivers licence
  • The ability to de-escalate challenging behaviour in a calm and respectful way. 
  • The ability to easily connect and listen to young people while maintaining appropriate boundaries
  • Life experience providing loving, safe, stable, nurturing, home environments and whānau relationships
  • Practical life skills you can teach a Rangatahi i.e. cooking, fishing, art, craft, gardening etc

Core Children Worker Police Vetting and CYRUS (Oranga Tamariki) Vetting and a Physical Functional test are part of the selection process.
