Southern Cross Wellington Hospital is a private surgical hospital and integrated, purpose-built specialist consulting centre. Originally established in 1992, the hospital currently includes day procedure facilities, five operating theatres and a modern intensive care unit. Specialities at Southern Cross Wellington Hospital includes, but is not limited to, orthopaedic surgery, major spinal surgery, neurosurgery, upper gastrointestinal surgery, general surgery, colorectal surgery, gynaecology, urology, and ophthalmology. Our caring and experienced team provide excellent perioperative services to over 5,000 patients annually across a range of ages. 

Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

We are looking for a Healthcare Assistant to join our team at Southern Cross Hospital in a 0.8-0.9 FTE Role. Reporting to the Patient Services Manager, you will play a vital role in supporting the delivery of safe, high-quality care to patients. Working under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, you will perform a range of direct and indirect tasks that contribute to patient comfort and wellbeing, as well as ensuring smooth ward operations.

This position involves assisting with patient services such as meal support, fluid balance monitoring, and patient transfers, alongside maintaining ward utility areas, managing linen supplies, and cleaning equipment. You will also uphold hospital policies, health and safety standards, and demonstrate cultural awareness and respect in line with Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles.

Ongoing professional development is encouraged, and you’ll have opportunities to grow your skills through training and education.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

  • Minimum 6 months’ experience as a Healthcare Assistant in a hospital or clinical setting
  • Level 3 Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (or equivalent qualification)
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally with patients, families, and healthcare teams
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks in a busy environment
  • Competent in basic computer applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook)
