Southern Cross Brightside Hospital

Southern Cross Brightside Hospital in Epsom, Auckland has 33 in-patient beds and 6 day-stay chairs. Surgical specialities include Orthopaedics, Urology, Gynaecology, General Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Otolaryngology.  

Our hospital features an intermediate care facility, a specialised post-operative ward for patients with medical conditions or surgical issues that require an enhanced level of monitoring and care. The beds are equipped to support invasive monitoring, medical infusions, and a 24-hour monitoring service, with specialised nurses with the knowledge and skills to deliver a more sophisticated level of care as required. 

Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

As our Healthcare Assistant, you’ll be an integral part of our perioperative team, playing a hands-on role in supporting safe, efficient, and high-quality surgical care. Working under the direction of our Registered Nurses and clinicians, you’ll help ensure our operating theatres run smoothly — from preparing theatre environments and equipment, to supporting patient flow before and after procedures.

This is a fast-paced, highly rewarding role where no two days are the same. Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting with patient transfers, 
  • Setting up and closing down theatres, 
  • Turning rooms around between procedures, 
  • Moving patients from theatre to the recovery room, 
  • Maintaining a clean and well-stocked theatre environment, 
  • Support nursing staff preparing lists for the next day using surgeons' preference lists,
  • Understanding and following theatre cleaning and disinfecting protocols and supporting infection prevention. 

You’ll work collaboratively within a close-knit theatre team that values professionalism, precision, and compassion. Upholding Southern Cross Hospital policies and procedures, contributing to a culture of safety and quality improvement, and taking pride in creating a calm, reassuring environment for patients will be at the heart of your practice. 

This is a full-time (1 FTE) permanent position based in at Southern Cross Brightside Hospital.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting, ideally with a couple of years’ experience as a Healthcare Assistant
  • Previous experience within a theatre or perioperative environment
  • A strong understanding of infection prevention and control principles
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills, with the ability to respond quickly in a dynamic surgical setting
  • Confidence assisting with patient transfers, positioning, and manual handling (with appropriate training)
  • Clear and professional communication skills, with the ability to work effectively alongside multidisciplinary teams
  • A calm, focused approach and the ability to follow instructions precisely in a high-acuity environment
  • A genuine passion for patient care and a commitment to the Healthcare Assistant profession
  • Completion of NCEA Level 2 / Sixth Form Certificate (or equivalent)
