Our role at Antarctica New Zealand is to support world-leading science and environmental protection in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean — including the operation of Scott Base, management of logistics to, from and within Antarctica, and raising awareness of the global importance of the continent.


Mō te mahi | About the role – What you’ll be doing

As Health, Safety and Risk (HSR) Manager, you will lead the organisation’s health and safety function, helping to ensure the people in our care stay safe while enabling the delivery of complex Antarctic operations.

This role is hands-on and influential — focused on supporting the organisation to embed a strong, proactive safety culture, building capability across leaders and teams, and ensuring effective systems and assurance are in place.

Working closely with senior leaders, you will provide trusted advice and practical leadership across health, safety and wellbeing, while also maintaining oversight of enterprise risk and organisational resilience.


Key accountabilities include:

• Leading health, safety and wellbeing strategy and delivery across the organisation

• Building leadership capability and accountability for safety outcomes

• Strengthening a proactive, learning-based safety culture

• Overseeing health & safety systems, assurance programmes and continuous improvement

• Ensuring strong incident management, investigation and organisational learning

• Providing clear assurance and insights on safety and risk to SLT and Board

• Supporting enterprise risk oversight and business continuity frameworks

• Partnering with internal teams and external agencies to enable safe, integrated operation


Mōu | About you – What you’ll bring

• Extensive experience in health and safety leadership roles, ideally in high-risk operational environments

• Proven ability to embed practical, effective health and safety systems and culture

• Strong knowledge of New Zealand health and safety legislation and best practice frameworks

• Experience providing assurance and influencing at senior leadership and governance level

• The ability to balance operational realities with risk and safety priorities

• A collaborative, credible leader who builds trust and drives change

• Calm, pragmatic and resilient, with sound judgement in complex environments
