Southland District Council covers 11% of the land area of New Zealand and incorporates areas such as Rakiura/Stewart Island, Piopiotahi/Milford Sound and the Catlins. As part of this portfolio it also owns and manages 155 open spaces (parks and reserves), varied in size and location as well as a number of beautification areas within towns.
These open spaces not only provide visual appeal and vitality to our communities they also provide areas for recreation which is conducive to Councils commitment to encouraging healthy thriving communities.
A key priority that Council has identified is to progress a strategic approach to the way that our open spaces are managed and developed. A strategy has been developed and this has created an exciting opportunity for a graduate open spaces planner to join our community facilities team to provide focus on progressing this work.
Our ideal applicant will be passionate about delivering the best outcomes for our communities. They will be qualified in reserves planning, a self starter, tech savvy (ideally with experience with GIS), comfortable writing and presenting to a variety of stakeholders and adept at building strong and enduring relationships.
Our ideal candidate will be tertiary qualified in the resource management field, confident in their approach when working with a wide variety of stakeholders.
They will also have:
· a good understanding of the Resource Management Act and its application
. clear, logical and pragmatic thinking
· diversity of thought – being able to view issues from a multitude of angles
· the ability to work individually as well as being a team player
· a great work ethic with strong alignment to providing great customer service
· excellent report writing skills
· a great “can do” attitude and team player focus
