At the Heart Foundation, we are driven by our purpose – to stop all people in New Zealand dying prematurely from heart disease and enable people with heart disease to live full lives. Throughout the country, our team of around 140 people delivers a diverse range of work including prevention and care and support programmes in local communities and fundraising for vital heart research.

About the Role:

This role is part of our Prevention team, which aims to educate New Zealanders about heart disease and promote healthy living practices to reduce the risk of heart disease.

As the Food Industry Manager, you will lead the Heart Foundation’s food reformulation programme, advocating for healthier food products and partnering with industry leaders. You will develop and implement an operational plan aligned with the Foundation’s strategic goals, identify key opportunities, and build strong relationships with food manufacturers, industry associations, and government agencies to reduce sodium and sugar in manufactured foods.

Additionally, you will provide expert advice, analyse industry data, and develop strategies to monitor progress. You will also showcase the programme’s success to consumer, health, academic, and industry stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the food reformulation programme by developing and implementing an operational plan.
  • Build and maintain relationships with food manufacturers, industry associations, and government agencies.
  • Advocate for reducing sodium and sugar in manufactured foods using evidence-based strategies.
  • Provide expert advice on new product development and food reformulation to help companies meet nutrient targets.
  • Monitor and analyse industry data to assess progress towards reformulation goals.
  • Develop evaluation strategies to measure impact and showcase programme success.
  • Engage with consumer, health, academic, and industry stakeholders to raise awareness of initiatives.
  • Support the Head of Prevention by contributing to reports for the Heart Foundation Board and Health New Zealand – Te Whatu Ora.

Our Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • A tertiary qualification in nutrition, dietetics, food technology, or public health.
  • Extensive knowledge of food reformulation, product development, and the broader food industry.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with experience engagingstakeholders at all levels.
  • Technical expertise in utilising industry data.
  • Excellent research, reporting, and presentation skills.
  • A solid understanding of food standards and nutrient composition in New Zealand.
