Our role at Antarctica New Zealand is to support world-leading science and environmental protection in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean and to and raise public awareness regarding the global significance of the continent. Our work supports the operation of Scott Base, management of logistics to, from and within Antarctica, ensuring the safe operation of Scott Base in one of the most remote and high‑consequence environments on Earth.  

Mō te mahi | About the role - What you’ll be doing 

 As Fleet Manager, you will hold accountability for Antarctica New Zealand's controlled plant and equipment. You’ll ensure assets are safe, compliant, well‑maintained and optimally deployed across competing priorities in a remote, safety‑critical environment.

 Key Responsibilities Include:    

  • Plan and control fleet and plant allocation across BAU and project work, balancing safety, readiness, maintenance windows and operational priorities
  • Set and enforce clear access rules, booking controls and operating requirements
  • Lead preventative maintenance planning, reliability and compliance through disciplined CMMS use
  • Manage breakdown response, contingency planning and critical spares strategies
  • Provide clear utilisation, availability and performance reporting for operational and governance decision‑making
  • Lead lifecycle planning from procurement input through to refurbishment, replacement, resale or disposal
  • Provide strong health, safety and environmental leadership aligned with Antarctic Treaty obligations
  • Manage relationships with contractors, OEMs, service providers and specialist suppliers
  • Drive continuous improvement across systems, data quality and fleet performance
  • The role includes seasonal deployment to Antarctica (typically several weeks per season) and requires the ability to gain and maintain Antarctic medical clearance.

 Mōu | About you - What you’ll bring   

You’re a calm, decisive fleet or plant manager who is comfortable operating in complex, constrained environments and making calls that protect people, assets and delivery outcomes.

Skills and Experience Include:   

  • Proven experience managing fleets and/or heavy mobile plant, including maintenance planning, compliance and lifecycle decisions
  • A strong mechanical grounding (trade background or equivalent experience)
  • Experience managing competing operational and project demands
  • Familiarity with CMMS/AMS systems, utilisation reporting and (ideally) telematics
  • Exposure to structured health and safety systems and incident investigation
  • Experience working in remote, cold or high‑consequence environments (e.g. Antarctic/Arctic, offshore, remote mining, defence) – highly desirable
  • Clear communication skills and the confidence to approve, decline or stop equipment use when required
