Community Mental Health Support Worker – Perinatal Team (He Kākano Ora)

Part-time (1 day per week – Tuesdays) | Fixed-term maternity cover

About the role

This is a part-time (1 day per week – Tuesdays) fixed-term role providing maternity leave cover within our He Kākano Ora perinatal mental health service.

As a Community Mental Health Support Worker, you will work alongside parents and their whānau experiencing mental health challenges during pregnancy and early parenthood. You will provide practical, person-centred support in the community, helping individuals build skills, strengthen relationships, and achieve goals that enhance wellbeing and quality of life.

This role is grounded in strengths-based, recovery-focused and trauma-informed practice, where authentic relationships and partnership are central. 

Key responsibilities

  • Build strong, trusting relationships with parents, pēpi and whānau
  • Co-design and implement recovery-focused support plans
  • Support wellbeing across whānau, physical, mental and spiritual domains 
  • Provide practical, community-based support (including parenting and daily living)
  • Work collaboratively with clinical teams and community partners
  • Complete timely and accurate documentation

  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Understanding of recovery and trauma-informed practice
  • Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and culturally responsive practice 
  • Lived experience (personal or whānau) of mental health challenges is valued
