Mō te tūranga | About the role

The Financial Mentor is responsible for building the financial capability and resilience of people, their families and whānau experiencing financial hardship. This is achieved by imparting financial management skills and knowledge as well as advocating on their behalf.Key responsibilities of the Financial Mentor include:

  • Developing supportive, trusting relationships with people, families and whānau, enabling positive change.
  • Carrying out an assessment of people’s situations and supporting them to reduce some of the pressures, while attending to their immediate needs. 
  • Helping people identify their aspirations and encouraging them to develop a plan to achieve those goals.
  • Working with whānau to develop a financial plan of action using a strengths-based approach.
  • Providing specialist interventions where applicable (i.e. advocating on clients behalf to reduced debt).
  • Supporting and empowering them in negotiations with financial services (i.e. reduced repayment amounts or extended due dates).
  • Referring people to other social services depending on their needs. For example, mental health services, addiction programmes, violence programmes, etc.
  • Support and empower clients to navigate local financial and social services as appropriate.

The ideal candidate will have a learning attitude, be proactive and able to manage confidential information appropriately. Flexibility and adaptability will also be important for this role

Skills and attributes we are looking for include:

  • Sound administrative experience.
  • Experience and/or transferrable skills in advocacy, developing personalised budgets, setting goal plans and advocating on behalf or with clients. 
  • 1-2 years experience working within the community and around finances.
  • A  compassionate and understanding attitude to those in need while maintaining a sense of reality and practicality in dealings with clients.
  • Well organised with a high level of computer literacy.
  • Able to develop internal and external relationships. 
  • High integrity.
