Our Organisation Performance group ensures the integrity of the Council’s financial systems and the Finance team collaborates across all areas of the community, maintaining compliance, transparency, and financial accountability.

The opportunity – the Financial Accountant role – will provide high quality, timely, effective financial advice, and technical accounting support to the Financial Services Manager and Chief Financial Officer, and work on key external financial reporting.

Our Financial Accountant is part of the team completing cashflow forecasts and treasury related functions, taxation returns and audits, reconciliation of the Balance Sheet General Ledger to the highest standard. Ensuring compliance with regulations, accounting standards, Council policies, and best practices, this role plays a part in maintaining financial integrity and sustainability across the organisation. The position will also be part of a team that supports the Council’s financial services processes and will have an opportunity to Business Partner with a Council business unit.

He kōrero mōu - About you

You are an experienced Accounting professional with a wide expertise in financial planning and performance monitoring within the local government sector. Leveraging your skills in financial analysis and modeling, you deliver high-quality, data-driven financial advice that enables effective decision-making and supports the Council’s financial objectives. 

Ideally, you have at least 3 years of work experience in a financial management position in a multidisciplinary environment with experience in implementing new and innovative solutions, anticipating issues before they arise. You hold a Bachelor of Accounting degree and are a Chartered Accountant with CAANZ membership or equivalent, or are progressing through CAANZ membership or equivalent. The Council is an CAANZ approved training organisation.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, is essential for success in this role. Experience with accounting software, planning and budgeting systems, and contemporary reporting tools would be highly advantageous.
