The role 

We are currently seeking an Environmental Scientist Freshwater to join the Science team in the Science, Strategy and Regulatory group. This is a permanent, full-time position based in our Palmerston North office. 

In this role, you’ll develop and lead a freshwater monitoring and research programme that supports policy development, informs implementation, and guides responses to environmental challenges. You’ll turn complex data into clear, practical insights, provide expert advice on policy and resource consents, and work closely with colleagues, iwi, and stakeholders to deliver effective solutions. Collaborating across teams and with external partners, you’ll help translate science into real-world outcomes. On-the-job training will be provided for the right candidate.

About you 

  • A degree in a relevant natural science discipline (postgraduate qualification advantageous).
  • Strong knowledge of freshwater systems, water quality, and ecological processes. 
  • Experience in environmental monitoring, data analysis, and scientific reporting.
  • Proven project management skills and the ability to deliver work on time and within budget.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to tailor messages to different audiences. 
  • A collaborative mindset and the ability to work across diverse groups.
  • A full driver’s licence.
