Port Nelson

About the role

If you are passionate about reducing the operational impacts of business on the physical environment, reducing carbon emissions, implementing innovative solutions for managing environmental aspects of industrial activity and integrating environmental management into the daily operating rhythm of a large entity like the Port, then this role should be of serious interest.

In the newly created role, you will have full ownership of the function and the freedom to add real value to Port Nelson.  You will get the chance to create your own vision for the whole environmental portfolio, molding the current function into a regional leader of environmental best practice.  You have here the opportunity to take a fresh look at how things are done and tailor changes and environmental management improvements from scratch including :

  • Developing the detailed delivery plans to deliver the 5-year Environmental Sustainability Strategy
  • Developing the detail and driving the delivery of the Carbon Reduction programme
  • Leading the scoping and identification of ongoing and specific environmental issues and investigating potential options to avoid, minimise or mitigate the environmental effects
  • Taking ownership of and managing external environmental committees and building relationships with key external environmental stakeholder groups

This is a genuinely exciting opportunity to stretch and develop your environmental sustainability management career within a complex environment, as well as growing your leadership skills through coaching and developing the Environmental Officer that reports to the role.

About you

A hands-on person, you gain great satisfaction overcoming the challenges of integrating environmental strategy and best practice into the workplace. You love being out there amongst it but are equally comfortable in front of a computer screen interpreting legislation and implementing best practice management. As well as being a self-motivated, can-do person and an effective influencer, you would ideally have:

  • A qualification in Environmental Management, Science, Engineering or Natural Resources
  • Experience with the development and implementation of Environmental Management Systems
  • Solid experience gained in environmental/sustainability related roles
  • Experience in negotiation and consultation with external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated understanding of project management
  • The ability to report technical matters in a non-technical manner
  • Genuinely effective interpersonal skills
  • Credibility and integrity, with the ability to gain confidence, trust and respect of internal and external customers
  • Initiative, adaptability and a willingness to learn.

If you are an existing environment/sustainability manager looking to expand your industry experience or have the chance to implement your own ideas, then this might be a perfect fit.  Alternatively, you might be a Senior Environmental Advisor looking for the next challenge and the opportunity to step into a management/leadership function.  Either way, you should be applying to this asap!
