About Us

The Horizons region extends over 22,200 km2 – from Ruapehu in the north and Horowhenua in the south, to Whanganui in the west and Tararua in the east. Our purpose is to work with and for our community in the use and protection of our environment, managing our precious resources of land, air and water; as well as public transport and a key role in emergency management. At Horizons Regional Council we work to make our region a healthy environment where people are thriving, including our staff.

The Role

As caretakers of the expansive region mentioned above, Horizons Regional Council offers you a diverse and challenging environment to put your engineering skills to good use.

We have an outstanding opportunity for a motivated and committed Engineering Officer to join our River Management Team within the Catchment Operations Group, working across part of the beautiful Horizons region.  This position is based at our Marton office but could see you working anywhere in our operational area from Bulls to Taumarunui.

You will join a close-knit team responsible for river and drainage activities in our region. This is an opportunity to have in-depth involvement in the many and varied projects focussed on keeping people and property safe from flooding.

As an Engineering Officer, you will be working closely with the Area Engineer, on planning, designing, constructing and maintaining river control works in a cost-effective manner. The role also monitors and reports on the condition of flood protection assets; and provides advice to landowners. You will be required to develop good working relationships with iwi, other agencies, and our ratepayers – particularly those in the rural area.

About you

We want the right person to join our team. Ideally you will have engineering experience with a passion to work outside, and be capable of writing technical reports, inputting data into the asset management system and updating our asset maps on ArcMap. We work over a large area, so holding a current full Class 1 driver’s license is essential. A qualification in Civil Engineering, another relevant engineering or science qualification, or at least progress towards such a qualification is desirable. However, we are also looking for someone with a proven ability to find practical engineering solutions to problems.  A working knowledge of Health and Safety, experience in contract supervision, and outstanding communication skills will also make you stand out above the crowd.

If you can bring passion and enthusiasm to work then look no further, we have the training and career progression to provide you with a great opportunity!

Why should you apply?

When you join us, you can look forward to a rewarding career full of opportunities to develop a positive and supportive work environment. We do this through:

  • Positive focus on employee health, wellness and wellbeing.
  • Providing you with your birthday off, and an extra week leave after 2 years of service.
  • Flexible, family-friendly work environment.
  • Ongoing professional and functional development and opportunities across the organisation to grow, specialise or diversify your skills.
  • A supportive and social work environment across the organisation.
  • Life insurance plus other wellbeing benefits for all permanent staff.

Applications close at 5.00pm on Monday 15 July 2024.
