We are looking for an experienced outdoor pursuits operations leader to join our Discovery Centre Team in Milford Sound.

 Position Objectives

You will be managing our Discovery Centre, located on the shores of Milford Sound to ensure a high and safe standard of service to all visitors to the Milford Discovery Centre & Kayaking Operation at all times in this 365-day operation. We are looking for someone with a proven track record in a leadership role in an outdoor water-based facility, You will be managing a team of Kayak Guide/Hosts to deliver guided tours both on and off the water and will be accountable for day-to-day tasks involved in running the DC. The successful candidate will also need to demonstrate skilled scuba-diving ability, with a minimum PADI Rescue Diver qualification (or equivalent) and preferably Worksafe Diver accreditation.  This part of the role is non-customer facing, and is focusing on the maintenance of our coral gardens and underwater observatory.

The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • Several years experience of working in the outdoor, water-based tourism industry
  • Prior leadership experience: you will be responsible for building, leading, and motivating the team
  • Commercial acumen and financial literacy, with the ability to manage a budget and seek ways to maximise revenue, working closely with our Sales & Marketing team
  • First aid qualified with a very strong focus on Health & Safety in a marine environment
  • Kayaking experience (especially with leading groups), public speaking experience, and knowledge (and love) of the underwater environment
  • Ability to think on your feet, problem-solve, and stay calm under pressure. 
  • Strong customer focus, with the desire to ensure guests have an amazing experience
  • Comfortable with living in and working in a remote environment in shared accommodation
  • Experience in planning and coordinating maintenance, liaising with contractors, quality checking work completed, and resolving issues
  • Strong organisational skills, comfortable with regular reporting requirements, payroll management, and rostering requirements

We provide a management flat with this position, as well as Wifi allowance and full uniform. Other benefits include Dive gear allowance, EAP counselling programme, free flu vaccinations, organised social events, free coach transport in and out of Milford, and a collaborative and supportive work environment. We work a roster of 10 days on and 4 days off to allow you to explore the amazing Fiordland region.
