The role 

We have an exciting role available within the Catchment Operations Group that plays a key part in helping protect people, and property from flooding through the sustainable management of our river and drainage assets.

Horizons Regional Council offers a diverse and challenging environment where you can apply your engineering skills to deliver outcomes that support both community resilience and wellbeing. We are seeking a motivated and committed Design Engineer to join our Investigation & Design Team, supporting the delivery of a busy programme of works and providing high-quality technical advice to the Catchment Operations Group.

This opportunity will see you involved with a range of work, including:

  • River Management Design and Advice - delivering and supporting designs that provide effective flood protection, erosion control, and river management outcomes, while also enhancing river form, function, and ecological health.
  • Hydraulic Modelling - eveloping and applying models to improve understanding of flood risk, climate change impacts, and catchment behaviour to support evidence-based decision making for resilient communities. 
  • Scheme Reviews and Audits - assessing the performance and sustainability of river and drainage schemes, with a focus on long-term resilience, environmental enhancement opportunities, and continuous improvement of catchment outcomes.

About you 

Ideally you will have a background in Civil / Environmental Engineering, or Physical Geography / Science, with an interest in open channel hydraulics or fluvial geomorphology. With a relevant qualification and experience and knowledge in this field you will also have excellent communication skills and be customer focused.
