Our Te Parehuia Residential Care Service is a 24 hours / 7 days a week, managed home to provide Rangatahi with the day to day aroha, care, stability, structure, social and cultural wellbeing they need.  

The Role

We are looking for a Cultural Support Worker to work in our Residential home. The purpose of the role is to build the cultural knowledge and tikanga in our whare, to provide support to our Whare Matua (House Parents) and the Rangatahi in our care. 

The Cultural Support Worker will help the Whare Matua (House Parents) to apply the Te Ao Maori world view and tikanga practises in the way they care for the Rangatahi entrusted to the residential home. They will provide extra support to the running whare, engaging with Rangatahi and planning activities particularly focused on local cultural connections, whakapapa and places of interest. 

The Cultural Support Worker will also be available to the Rangatahi to explore and understand their cultural connections with their wider whānau, hapu and iwi and to know that they are special, valued and important.  The ability to teach waiata and Kapa haka is an advantage also. 

This is a part-time, permanent position (20 hours per week). Over the two week roster, Week One is Monday to Thursday 8am to 1pm and in Week 2, Friday 8am to 12pm, Saturday 8am to 4pm and Sunday 8am to 4pm.

What we are looking for: 

  • Previous experience with Rangatahi, especially those who have lived in high stress, traumatic home environments
  • Minimum Level 3 Certificate in Health and Wellbeing, Te Reo or related qualification  
  • Confidence in Te Reo Māori and tikanga practises
  • Knowledge of Te Whare Tapa Wha assessment, planning and interventions and whānau-centred approaches
  • Connections with local iwi and marae
  • Aroha, enthusiasm and patience for Rangatahi
  • The ability to easily connect and listen to Rangatahi while maintaining appropriate boundaries
  • A current Full Drivers licence.
  • Physical fitness for outside activities and excusions and household chores to maintain the whare
  • Knowledge and experience with data entry and reporting.
