Cruise Operations Supervisor

Port Otago Group’s business comprises a regional container terminal, bulk port activities, cruise, and property investment and development. Based out of Port Chalmers (Dunedin), we service South Canterbury, Otago, and Southland, working with customers to streamline their supply chains. Our culture is hands-on, safety focused and encourages continuous improvement.

We are excited about the busy cruise ship season ahead at Port Chalmers and Dunedin starting October 2024 through to April 2025 which will see us welcoming 120,000 visitors to our beautiful city.

About the Role

We’re looking to strengthen our Cruise team by appointing a permanent, full-time Cruise Operations Supervisor, predominantly based at our Head Office in Port Chalmers. Previously a seasonal position, this role will now support our cruise operations team during the off-season too.

During our cruise season this role will:

  • Supervise a team of Cruise Assistants to ensure they complete their day-to-day duties safely, while creating a positive experience for our cruise visitors.
  • Monitor relevant cruise ship access points.
  • Ensure a safe and efficient flow of operations in relation to all cruise activity, including transfer of passengers and external operators.
  • Assist with cruise ship correspondence via email and phone calls, including pre-planning/delivery of cruise ship requirements.

During our off-season, this role will assist with:

  • Cruise setup requirements for the following season.
  • Complete other project work as required to support the successful delivery of the Cruise strategy.
  • Provide support with other Port Otago events as required.

Hours of Work

  • You will need to be available to work 5 shifts per week, which are typically 8 hours, (i.e., 40 hours per week). The shifts can fall between Monday to Sunday during our cruise season.
  • Flexibility is required at times as vessel timings can vary at short notice which means you may be required to work longer shifts (i.e. up to 10 hours), and at times you may be required to work additional shifts or cover for unplanned absences.
  • You’ll need to be the kind of person that loves a European summer holiday rather than a New Zealand one, as you need to be available to work across our summer cruise season. There will be plenty of opportunity to take leave during the off season.
  • During our off-season, hours of work are predominately Monday to Friday, 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week.

About You

Our ideal candidate will be passionate about tourism and creating a memorable first impression of Dunedin for our passengers. Additionally, it’s important to us that you’re a solutions-focused person who can take an analytical approach to problem solving, and that you’re eager for career progression and development.

Our ideal candidate will also be able to demonstrate:

  • Exceptional personal standards of health and safety.
  • Ability to juggle people and tasks seamlessly, with the ability to think on your feet.
  • Natural leadership skills and previous supervisory experience, with the ability to relate to team members and passengers alike.
  • Confident with technology including the use of spreadsheets and digital rostering systems.
  • Able to manage and resolve potential conflicts, including with passengers.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.

Why Port Otago?

  • Competitive pay, 7% KiwiSaver employer contribution and opportunities for career progression.
  • Brand new head office (based in Port Chalmers) with amazing views of Otago Harbour.

  • Free on-site parking and access to EV charging stations.
  • Fantastic wellness programme and initiatives including fresh fruit delivered weekly to all breakrooms.
  • Contribution towards relocation costs to Dunedin for our successful candidate.

Heads Up

  • A full, clean NZ Driver’s License is required.

  • We undertake random drug and alcohol testing.
